This diagram of a particle interaction has probably caused a lot of confusion. It explains repulsion, but not attraction. Lisa Randall finally addressed this in Warped Passages. She used a frisbee metaphor where the frisbee is caught after it turns back so that the momentum is towards the thrower, rather than away. It isn't a perfect metaphor, but attractive forces work much the same way as repulsive forces.
